hi everyone
i'm trying to connect to sles9 desktop from my win xp pc .
i'm using thightvnc that came with my sles9 installation .
i've stated the vnc server on my sles9 platform with :

vcnserver -depth 16 -geometry 1240x768

and i'm connecting from my local pc using vnc wiever

i get the connection but all i've got on the screen is one open shell console and a gray backround . and when i close the console i got nothing .

should i be able to see the entire desktop like on the sles9 platform or not??
are there any other settings that i need to do ???????????

Go to the home dir of the ID that you started vncserver with, look for a .vnc directory. go into that directory and edit the xstartup file.... at the end of the file add a line that says

/opt/kde3/bin/startkde &

(Substitute the windowmanager of choice if you don't want KDE)

If you so choose, comment out the line that start xterm (if it's even there) and the line that starts twm (??)

kill the running vncserver. vncserver -kill :2 (or whatever session ID it's running on) and restart the vncserver.

I've got a similar problem as the poster originally mentioned, but when I try and add "'exec gnome-session &" or "/usr/bin/gnome-session &" (going off memory, I think that's the path) I get an error "you're already running a session-manager" and still get only the terminal with the gray background. Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.

EDIT: This thread came up on a search and I only just realized it's under the 'SUSE/Novell' forum, I'm running Ubuntu (debian) myself...anyone have any ideas that would still apply?
