How to run a program at boot time

Running openSuse 10.3.

I have an application, (not Linux service), that must be started by "root" and needs to be started at boot time. I've read the /etc/init.d/README file and I kind of understand the concept what it is saying. What I don't understand is how to go about setting everything up. I know what my application start script will look like but not sure how to get it installed/linked into the correct rc?.d directories or inittab files. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

If it is not a service, you can easily put the command in /etc/init.d/boot.local. But if the application provides some graphical interface, you have to launch it as soon as the graphic environment is set up.
