How to have SuSE 9.3 without a desktop envirinment?
Does anyone know if it is possible to run SuSE 9.3 without a desktop
envirinment? For my work I just need a simple window manager and a
good editior. On SuSE 7.2 and 8.2 I was able to run fvwm and nedit.
If it is possible I would appreciate learning how, thanks.
Yes you can. During installation, don't install one or if you have installed one, disable the system from starting in GUI mode by changing the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 5 to 3.
Likewise, if your system automatically boots into X. just press Ctl-Alt-Backspace to kill it and get to the command line.
Thats another option, but if you are using a DM, this may not work. The DM service may keep restarting X depending on how its configured. CTRL-ALT-Fn, login as root, then "init 3" may resolve this problem.
Thanks, exactly what I needed. Oh! that highpitched squeal you might have
heard just now was a delighted seventy-year-old who's flattered to be called a
newbie
