how to create space?

i am running suse 10.1 on a hp nx6110 with 40gb of hdd space. unfortunately, i both reserved a little too much space for never-used windows and am working on too many pictures at the same time. yesterday i had 1,5gb left on my linux-partition hda7, today it was obviously down to ~680mb - since gimp managed to abrupt my work with a 680mb swap-file. running knoppix from a cd i could just delete som files in my audio-folder...

the question is: how can i create space without really having to delete anything i need? there surely are a lot of programs installed that i never use. i would like to have an overview over those programs and how much space they use - without having to know their names on the forehand as in yast. additionally i am looking for a command or something that could remove all temporary files every once in a while.

my partitions look like this: http://home.arcor.de/noroli/partisjonering.jpg
after all i might have a serious need for an extern hdd, but lack the money.

regards

Is any of this what you want?

1. you can mount widooes partition also. you even can convert to ext2 or whatever also.

2. du command to see which file is huge. (sort -n) will help.

3. buy momory stick.

i have one with 256mb, this is not exactly a big relief... but maybe i should consider buying a bigger one instead of an extern hdd.

Item One: This is Linux; not windoze. Unless you have your system set up to keep tmp files, they will be deleted on re-boot. Unlike windoze in which you have to do it manually on occaision. However, you should clear the caches in .kde, .mozilla, etc., and occaisionally go to /var/log and clear out old logs.

Item Two: use windoze and Partition Magic to resize the windoze partition. Windoze parks some files near the end of the partition. They are necessary for proper functioning of the os. If you resize the windoze partition with PM, it will move those files to keep them. If you use a Linux utility to resize the partition, those files won't be moved, and windows *may* be non-bootable. It depends on how far in from the end you move that partition boundary.

Then you can resize a Linux partition to take up the free space.

Note that you should make a backup of your Linux, and have a boot floppy or boot cd handy. Moving the front end of the partition may make the Linux partition non-bootable. You may have to restore a backup, or make a fresh install then restore the backup.
