By default, SuSE uses kinternet. You can use it to connect to a wireless network.

If this is your home network, setting up the keys for wpa-psk in the YaST2 network interfaces module will allow you to connect when you boot up.

Also, be sure you have the wireless-tools and wpa_supplicant packages installed.

If the command iwconfig is found, then you have wireless tools. A quick check to see if the wireless device works is to enter the command "iwlist <interfacename> scan". If your wireless interface is wlan0, then
"iwlist wlan0 scan" will scan for wireless networks and print out information about them. This command is handy when installing wireless. Before authentication, you won't have an IP address. But you can scan if the device works.

There is also a kwifimanager program you use instead. Select scan for networks and select the network to connect to. I think that you may need to enter the information on the network in the setup. At least if it uses encryption. However, this program seems to just support WEP.

I can also suggest Netapplet (which is normally a Gnome program). This just basically does an "ifup" on all your devices that are listed in your /etc/sysconfig/network/ folder containing your ifcfg-<device> files.

Those files are generated by configuring your network cards in Network Cards in Yast.

what about the marvel chipset cards? These seem particularly devious to get going in SuSE.
Specifically: 00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 03)

I notice I have an ndiswrapper.ko kernel module but NO ndiswrapper command. All the examples I've seen so far use ndiswrapper as a command. This is on a neighbour's Suse 10.1 system. What is the process to get this card working in Suse 10.1?
