How do you make sequencers work in SUSE 10.1?

I would like to use one of the sequencers included with SUSE 10.1, like ZynAddSubFX, NoteEdit or Muse. But am not having any luck. I get either no sound, or error messages like "Direct access to the sound device not possible". This message came from Muse. When I run ZynAddSubFX I can play on the built-in virtual keyboard and can see the level meters moving, indicating that sounds are being generated, but can hear nothing. Strangely, the drum sequencer, Hydrogen, works great, with very powerful realistic drum sounds. I have started Jack and then tried but with no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
