ok... let's take a step back -- what are you typing (into console) -- or how are you trying to access your 'root' folder?

you're using linux, right?

i'm still not really understanding what you're trying to do - i guess you're opening a graphical file manager, and trying to access the / directory -- is this correct?

you need to open a console window -- know how to do that?

and enter the command 'su' (without quotes) -- you will now be prompted for a password, that is the root password. you enter it, press enter, and you have just logged in as root.

--they are referencing the user you need to be, not the location to work from...

that much i can't really help you with -- look through your menu for a terminal program or console program... or if you have the ability to run a command, try running xterm

well... yes and no...

i do a lot from the terminal -- it is my preference... i've never thought about how i would do some things graphically (like building/installing)

don't get discouraged...

you can't just click on it to install it -- this is why you need to open the xterm...

you then genreally extract it -- if the extensions are .tar.gz, you would run 'tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz'

you change to the extracted directory, and run
Code:
./configure
make
su
<enter password>
make install
exit
