Getting Dvix driver/codec to install/work

I went to divx's website and downloaded this file, divx4linux-std-20030428.tar.gz I extracted it. and then I went into terminal and tried to excute the installer by typing sh install.sh

here is the terminal transcript

tcoletto@linux:~/bin/Divx> sh install.sh

cp: cannot remove `/usr/local/lib/libdivxencore.so': Permission denied

su/sbin/ldconfig: Can't create temporary cache file /etc/ld.so.cache~: Permission denied
tcoletto@linux:~/bin/Divx> su
Password:
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/Divx # sh install.sh
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/Divx #

So when I run it as root, it just flat out does nothing? What can I do to get divx working?

I also tried xine and got this...

linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/xine # ./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for style of include used by make... GNU
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/xine #

And for some reason Nautils cant open rpms...

Ok I went into yast did add programs, poped in the DVD. I installed all the GCC files and it still is giving me problems..

tcoletto@linux:~/bin/xine> su
Password:
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/xine # sh INSTALL
INSTALL: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `C'
INSTALL: line 1: `Copyright (C) 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 Free Software'
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/xine #

configure file
(after 1000 lines of configing)
configure: error: zlib needed
linux:/home/tcoletto/bin/xine #

I then checked to see if zlib was installed and it said it was...

Ugh I am very frusteriated now. Ive gone from Mandrake to SUSE. In the past 7 days. I just want things to work. I'm really trying to patient. Its just really hard to get things working somtime. I don't know is Linux for me? I really like the hole concepts of linux and Im trying to learn unix. :-( What should I do?

Seems you have a couple of problems:

1. you have solved yourself, it didn't work because you were not root
2. did you check if the files were copied to their location? Maybe the installation went just fine.
3. you do not have gcc installed, that's why ./configure complains. For compilation of xine you will need a huge amount of devel packages and libraries to get this running.

My solution: use pre-compiled packages from http://packman.links2linux.de
All you are looking for is available here. You may want to add this server to the Yast installation sources for facilitated installation. Have a look in the sticky Yast update sources thread in this forum.

Have fun !

as abisko00 suggested , the easiest way to setup yast to use repositories

then u will be able to install alot of programs from yast

my friend has suse and i setup yast for him and installed : w32codecs , xvid , divx now any movie that he plays works without any problems
