I'm a relative newbie, too, so I don't think I can come up with 10, but at least I remember what I did/should have done.

1) Make sure you have your password configuration set the way you want. (I installed the check password options because me wife and kids are less used to worrying about security.)
2) Verify your internet connection
3) Use the update tool. You can find this in the software section of Yast.
4) Mount any windows partions, so you can access files there and never boot windows again.
5) Install firefox, thunderbird (or your favorites) using Yast and the bremen-de link in some of these threads. If you've done 4, you can import your Windows addresses and bookmarks.
6) Verify your sound works appropriatly.
7) Remove the Suse xine, or other DvD player, etc.
8) Install xine, or favorite DvD player using Yast and the above link.
9) Customize your environment.
10) Back everything up, using the Yast back up utility under system.

11) Install the development tools from the SuSE FTP server. Sooner or later you want to compile something.

I don't compute! I need to remove xine then put it back on?
why?

Because the SuSE version of Xine is a restricted version due to legal reasons. If you want full capacity xine (to be able to play encryptet DVD's), you need another version.

OK, I have removed everything to do with xine. I hope that included Kaffine. Anyway, what dvd player should i put on (Please include link)? I want quality and preferably something that I have to install using Konsole, as I realize the importance of learning to use a terminal.

thankyou

Have a look at the sticky thread in this forum, dealing with update sources. I have posted a short description on how to use these servers with yast (post#10). The source for xine is as follows:

server: packman.iu-bremen.de
direcory: suse/9.1

for all other SuSE software that is missing on 9.1 Personal use the SuSE server itself or one of it's mirrors:

server: ftp.suse.com
direcory: pub/suse/i386/9.1

The software will be installed the usual way with Yast. This is totally without console, but don't worry, you need to install libdvdcss in order to watch encrypted DVD's this requires console work

Have a look here for a description:

cools, thanks!
now for the konsole work with that libdvdcss file, YAY!

I also figured out not to uninstall Kaffine if you want to keep your kdetv working.

Heh, If you connected to an internet connection the first things I would do is...

1) Turn off any unnessicary Services (ftp, ssh, telnet etc etc)
2) Run YOU (yast online update)
3) Configure Iptables as your firewall
4) Install MySQL and Limit it to localhost
5) Install and configure SNORT to dump to MySQL
6) Install ACID to read your snort Logs
7) Open up YAST Install / Remove Packages and remove any packages that your not going to be using
8) Never run Sendmail or Wu-ftp - Download Qmail / Proftpd if you want to run those services
9) Make sure you Remove Bind - If you are going to install a DNS server use djbdns (TinyDNS)
10) Read you SuSE Manuals from Front to Back and then purchase some books on ... snort, Linux , php, Mysql whatever, to better yourself when it comes to running a Linux Machine and getting the most possible out of doing so.

All of the above are just my suggestions - It will really suck for you to install your Linux box and have some gimp root your box - Most people tend to think that if someone roots your box... you can get away with just a reinstall, this is not always true, it will come down to the knowledge of the person that cracks your box and exactly how evil they want to be.... They can go as far as rendering various Hardware to junk...... Killing firmware etc....

Security should be your Number 1 Concern!

Ahh, this is very helpful as I was worrying about security. I wasn't sure what I should do. Thank you for your advice. I am on my way to the library to pic up a couple books now.

Cheers,
