File Permissions

Sigh hi folks how are we? ok using opensuse 10.2, have 2 drives I have mounted, Have done chown and chmod 777 to both drives, when I try to transfer files I am getting they are read only drives? HUH? lol sorry this is the first time I have ran into this and yes I did the chmod 777 as su, any Ideas? both drives are formatted as "native" linux so I really cant see wtf! is goin on. TIA

might be in /etc/fstab could be mounting them as ro read only
check in /etc/mtab also I notice all mine are here as rw
