External hard drive data transfer speed
Here's the scoop:
1) I plug my USB external hard drive (formatted ext3) into the box and I get data transfer rates less than 5 MB/s. The drive is automatically recognized and mounted using hotplug, I assume. DMA is enabled for the internal IDE drive.
2) If I put an entry into my /etc/fstab file that's like:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive ext3 noauto,rw,users 0 0
and mount the drive, I get data transfer speeds up to 30 MB/s. But now, with the above line in /etc/fstab, my USB flash pen drive (formatted fat32), camera, etc, does not get mounted properly by hotplug. What is going here? How do I get the best of both worlds? I am running 9.2 Pro. Thanks.
