Completely unable to compile anything from source, 9.1 Personal

I have a horrible problem I have been trying to resolve for weeks but have been unable to. I'm using Suse 9.1 Personal, and all I need to be able to do is compile applications from source, the standard ./configure, make, and make install routine that I've done so many times before. But, I get the error of no acceptable c compiler found in $PATH. I have followed others' instructions and downlaoded the following rpms from ftp.suse.com:

gcc-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm
glibc-2.3.3-98.i586.rpm
autoconf-2.59-75.i586.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.3-98.i586.rpm
automake-1.8.3-23.i586.rpm
make-3.80-184.i586.rpm

These all install fine except for automake..., which gives me a dependency for m4, which I downloaded in a source tarball, but I can't install it either. I can ./configure, but when I make it says:

cd . && autoheader
/bin/sh: line 1: autoheader: command not found
make: *** [stamp-h.in] Error 127

So I'm still stuck, can't compile anything from source. Among the packages I've tried are kmid-1.7, m4-1.4, gaim-1.0.2, muse-0.7.0, rosegarden-4-0.9.9, and TiMidity++-2.13.1. I've heard that Suse doesn't come with everything you need for development, but under Yast-Software-Install and Remove Software, I have all the Development software from the cd installed, in fact, I have every single package from the CD installed. I truly appreciate any help of this problem of mine!

You would have much better luck with SuSE Linux Pro. . .

But anyway. . .

You might want to try uninstalling the RPMs. Setting up an FTP server as a software source, make it the default and only source. Then search for the same RPMs off the server. Install, and all deps will be pulled along from the server.

That way you know it will work. And it beats downloading the RPMs one by one.

Suse 9.1 personal/home is missing a /bin/sh link.

ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh

You will also find other stuff missing like awk etc.

/enjoy

Thanks. I'll try uninstall the rpm's, and doing the Yast installs from ftp. Can anyone give me a quick how-to on the whole YAST FTP deal? I tried the Change Installation Source then adding an ftp source, but it never like to connect even though I can access the same URL from a web browser and download the files. I need to know exactly what to put in the Server name and what to put in the Directory on Server, because I suspect my problem is there.

I've seriously been considering trying out Pro, you say it has all the dev stuff already?
