Beryl and Unreal Tournament

Greetings to all.

I've just successfully installed Unreal Tournament GOTY. I can start the game successfully, but as soon as I try and load a map, or change the screen resolution from the default 640x480, it crashes with:

Code:
Resizing SDL viewport. X: 1280 Y: 1024
OpenGL
X Error of failed request: GLXBadContextTag
  Major opcode of failed request: 148 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 144 ()
  Serial number of failed request: 5445
  Current serial number in output stream: 5446
Signal: SIGSEGV [segmentation fault]
Aborting.
I've done a bit of reading around that indicates that Beryl may be causing the conflict. This post here suggests altering the UnrealTournament.ini as follows:

Edit UnrealTournament.ini and change
OpenGLLibName=libGL.so.1
to
OpenGLLibName=/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa
if using nVidia.

If using ATI, change it to
OpenGLLibName=/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa

Is Beryl + 3D gaming achievable? I've read some other threads that suggested starting another x session. I gave this a try with startx -- :2 etc, but it starts another x session with Beryl present.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

- Perps

Why not just turn off beryl in either your default X session or in your new one? Easy enough to do if you run the beryl manager; just choose the window manager you want.

I have also noticed (I have nvidia graphics) that if I specify the "force nvidia" choice for the rendering engine I have problems switching consoles, but if I specify the "force aiglx" choice I can switch consoles without trouble. Usually games render in their own root window on their own console so it could be that you are having a similar problem.

Unreal works just fine for me, all I have to do is switch beryl to kwin(I use KDE) using the beryl-manager.

Thankyou all for your replies.

I've created another account. How do I set it so that it does not start beryl at login, as it is currently doing at the moment.

Many thanks,

How do you have beryl set to auto start? Are you using KDE or Gnome?

If you followed this:
http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl#Configuration

It shouldn't be starting automatically for every user.

Hey cybertaz,

I followed the link you posted when I setup Beryl ages ago. Interestingly though, I never had to set Beryl to start myself, it seemed to do it automatically. I just checked the sessions tool in the Gnome control panel, and I could find no reference to beryl or beryl-manager in the startup tab. Beryl is definitely running though.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

- Perps.

No. You have me. I use KDE and had to set it to auto-start.

Do you have a $home/.gnome/autostart folder? (. means hidden file/folder) you may have to show hidden files, I don't how to do that in Gnome.

Haha, stupid me.

I had xgl/compiz running the whole time, not Beryl. I added beryl and beryl-manager to startup items in sessions and now I have beryl running properly. Unreal Tournament runs smooth as silk under beryl with no problems. Thankyou to everyone for your help.
