Bad Disk

I have an Altus 3200 server running SUSE Enterprise 8 and I am quite certain that I have a bad disk drive. The only problem is, I do not have much experience with SUSE and do not know the steps I need to take to verify this and fix it. The reason I beleive there is a bad disk is because next to every disk on the server there is a red LED and one of them is lit.

So, what do I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

What filesystem are you running? Reiserfs, ext3, ext2?? Type 'mount' and it should tell you.

Might you have a RAID Array ? That would be about the only way to not see data loss on your system.

Output of 'mount'

/dev/sda2 on / type ext3 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5)
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
/dev/sda5 on /var type ext3 (rw)
shmfs on /dev/shm type shm (rw)
usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)

There is no data loss so I believe that it is a RAID. If this is the case, can I just yank the disk and put in a new one? Will it automatically detect the new disk and rebuild or is there some commands I need to run?

Thanks

No, you have no raid array installed in your computer.

You can try to repair the filesystem by using fsck.

I don't even know what filesystem needs repair. There seems to be no problem with accessing any/all of the filesystems. Plus, I thought that if the LED was on that indicated some kind of hardware failure.

Thanks

just use >mount< to see which filesystem you are using.

I think this means just fsck all of them. I would. It will atleast tell you the condition of each.
