Bliss is the only Linux-compatible virus seen in the wild.
Still, better safe than sorry. Afraid I cant help there though, I dont have an AV program.

For the firewall, SuSE comes with it's own which can be configured through YAST.

SUSE has a firewall installed per default, if can be configured through YaST. For the AV, you don't want to hear my answer

I am like the rest with AV for Linux. But I use AVG with Windows. They make a AV for Linux, http://www.grisoft.com/doc/Programs/ . If it is like the one for Windows, it should work good for you.

Hi,

I beilieve the AVG software for Linux isn't free, unlike its Windows counterpart... I think you get a 30 day trial, after which payment is required.....

You could give Clam AV a try -

http://www.clamav.net/

I've used that in the past - no GUI, but easy enough to use via the command line..

Setting the Linux virus vulnerablity argument to one side, our favoured operating system can still act as a carrier for various nasties, and scanning files and attachments prior to despatch to Windows users might be seen as a 'good thing' - at least as far as friends / family, common courtesy, etc.. (Yes, I know it's the recipient's ultimate responsibility, but I for one can do without my brother-in-law having a go, thinking that the virus has originated in Linux, etc....)...

yep, but that means that you have an antivirus installed, no?

so far, I saw only 2 for Linux (both command line driven): BitDefender and Clam AntiVirus.

Virus checker, Fprot(google), no GUI try bdc (bitdefender.com). Firewall, Firestarter(google), or built-in (SuSe) firewall. I use both of both. And all for FREE.....

Most, if not all, Linux anti-virus programs are used to scan for Windows viruses, its a matter of courtesy not to pass them on

If you want to know how prevalent Linux viruses are Google for "Linux virus", and try to find a list of Linux viruses in the wild. Nearly all the results will be software companies wanting to sell anti-virus products for Linux - they know most new users come from Windows and actually expect viruses, so they are cashing in on their paranoia.

The truth is Linux viruses are not a problem at the moment, but that's not to say they wont be in the future. At the moment root kits are a much bigger problem, so secure your machine, dont run unnecessary services, activate your firewall and don't run as root if you can avoid it.

Nop, there aren't. All the existing exemplars have never been seen in the wild and the last one dates from 2000.

*Native* viruses are not a thread in Linux, but:

Antiviruses also cares about trojans, allthough there are few opportunities to get r00ted in the windows way using pre-packaged trojans, the possibility exist and it could become a serious problem in the future.

Running Clamav twice a day causes no noticeable overhead and is a good practice.

An IDS would also be a nice idea.
