I just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.1 from the DVD image and Amarok 1.4.10 is being doubly stupid: First, when listening to, for example, Sky.FM streams, the track titles don't show up (works with 10.3 and 1.4.8). The same is true of other streaming sources, too. Second, Amarok can't cope with .ASX streams although it used to (on the machine running 10.3, although that's since stopped there, too - notably with Soma.FM).
Doing some searching, I find articles talking about doing all manner of magic spells with creating play lists, etc., only one step harder than using Screamer Radio under WinXP. Is there something else to be done?
Do you have the right Amarok and if not, install Amarok-xine from Restricted Formats
I have openSUSE 11.0 but assume the circumstances are the same for 11.1. Amarok-xine will not play if you do not use YAST to remove xine-lib. You can then open Amarok, and under Settings, Configure Amarok, see the icon for the Engine and change it to xine.
In reading the notes for Amarok on the Restricted Formats page, I see that there is no longer certain support for streaming. I would suggest you try vlc as an alternative. It has an automatic installation process similar to that for the packages from Restricted Formats. You will find it here.
I just ran it and sources like Soma.FM don't play at all. Sources like Sky.FM play but all of the track title information, etc. is not displayed, and the existing playlist entry information/titles are blanked out after showing very briefly, replaced with a four digit number.
I used the software manager to confirm that Amarok, etc. updated correctly and it all looks right. But the tracks don't play.
I'll look into vlc as an alternative but given Amarok has been around for a while and seems to be fairly common, I'm surprised at the problem with titles (an out and out bug) and non-support for ASX, both of which worked well earlier. In short, it sure looks as though something's broken.
The missing titles is due to problems with the yauap engine which, from what I could find from googling around, is generally buggy. Putting in the xine engine restored the titles in streams. Explicit ASX support is still toast although I can get to Soma.FM streams by using different URL's (e.g., Illinois Street Lounge - http:/somafm.com/play illstreet - works while none of the other links to it do).
On my debian etch laptop, amarok 1.4, I have the same problem. However, if I set totem to be the default helper in iceweasel, then drag from the totem window to the amarok playlist, it works.
Totem translates the somafm stream into a serverort kind of URL that amarok can handle. Then I close totem and let amarok play it, titles and all.
