64 bit install problems - internet

Hi Folks,

Ive been having problems with Suse 9.1.

System:

Abit Kv8 PRo
Athon 64
WD JB80 HD
Sony CD/DVD
Generic ADSL router
SMC Ethernet card

Here is the issue:

When I try to install Suse 64 bit on to the PC it gets up to the point where you type in network details, it logs on to the net then hangs. It wont read updates from the web. Strange.

I tried installing the 32bit version and it worked perfectly.

Also been having problems with the inbuilt VIA gigabit but installing an old network card worked around it.

Downloaded a driver for the Gigabit ethernet on the VIA site but wooh! having a hard time installing it so im sticking with the extra net card for now while I sort out my 64bit install.

Why wont the 64bit version load up properly while the 32bit version work flawlessly?

Just thought that it be better to have the 64bit version up and running on the amd64.

Strange.

First how were you able to install the 32bit version? What did you do at the install. I had a similar problem with my 64bit install. But I just skipped it. If I recall correctly there is a skip button on the bottom. After I was able to install a secondary card and all has worked since.

BTW I'm interested in the 32 bit because most of the additional software (updates, etc..) packages are not available in binary form for the x86_64 kernel and I often have issues compiling.

I just followed the prompts and disregarded the sign complementing me on how cool my computer was but warning me that im installing a 32bit os on a 64bit cpu.

Easy Peesy

I tried doing the 64bit install with the smc card but it still wouldnt get thru the process. I guess I can try skipping the 'check network' part and try doing it from inside suse.

Has anyone had a similar problem with the Abit KV8 Pro AMD 64 Suse 9.1 combo?
