Here again you MUST do your homework before "blindingly installing an OS".

1) There are specific Linux issues with IBM thinkpads that are publicised all over the net --so I'm not going to re-iterate them here.

2) If you start recomiling a Kernel --then any comments you make about "the Base" or "Standard" install are not valid -- You could easily have selected a wrong / incompatable option etc etc. Who knows.

3) VMware on their own site have specific issues with Kernel 2.6-X and you can't blame SUSE for this.

I agree that onece you've installed a distro then you want it to do productive work and apps that you want to use SHOULD work -- but check out the sites first.

If you are relatively new to this game --just get the base install working first -- and then add more complexity.

Whilst Linux is improving in Leaps and Bounds as far as stand alone computers are it does require a different "mindset" than from Windoze which is essentially a "Turnkey" (or should I say a "Turkey") system. It'll require on the whole a bit more effort to get it working the way you want than Windoze --but at least you can customize it unlike 'Doze -- so this means a bit more work unfortunately.

However perserevere a bit and the rewards are well worth it.

What probs EXACTLY are you having with php (or is this YET ANOTHER TROLL) on this thread.

There's something about this thread that seems to be attracting trolls like wasps around an opened jar of jam.

I LOVE SuSE 9.2 Pro

Just to add my 2 cents, I installed SuSE 9.2 Pro on my Gateway laptop 9500 with a D-Link GWL-650 wireless card. Everything worked flawlessly out of the box! Using YAST works well, and dependancy issues were not an issue. Additionally, I installed 9.2 on a desktop I built a while ago and it works without a hitch at all!

I also tried Ubuntu and I found it slick but lacking some of the advanced features I wanted. For beginners, it is a good disto to cut your teeth on.

Despite some of the derogatory comments here about SuSE, I found it complete and easy to use.

Well I've been using Suse for ? maybe 6 months (9.1 then 9.2).

Pros:
  1. Nice easy install on my PC.
  2. All hardware detected properly and working.
  3. Good selection of software (if you download the entire tree)
  4. Uses SysV init scripts.

Cons:
  1. Yast! Despite the hype you've no doubt heard about how wonderful yast is I hate it. Slow buggy piece of crap, the Mandrake Control Center runs circles around yast.
  2. Will not install on my laptop, no way, no how. Tried CD's, DVD's, HardDrive and FTP installs. Tried every boot parameter in the book and still no install. To be fair though my laptop doesn't like Slack or Mandrake either, just KNOPPIX?

I posted very early in this thread and after watching many of the comments, I went back and reinstalled Suse 9.2 on my laptop today. (I hate to be defeated! ) After some minor configuring and now playing for the last few hours, I have to say it's now running well. It's still a "little" buggy, as previously noted, but I ran into none of the problems I'd encountered before and thus far I do have to say, it looks better than most distros I've used this year. Now, if it remains as stable as those other distros, that will be something I'll be happy about!

As it is normal with SuSE (and Mandrake and so on), the longer a release has been out the fewer the problems: bugfixes, solutions found out...

And no, 1kyle, not everybody complaining is a troll: personally I was quite dissatisfied with 9.2 out of the box, but now almost everything is running fine. SuSE has been my fav distro since 8.2

/bin/bash: yes, YaST is slow, but other than that I prefer it to most setup tools. At least it is very complete and everything is very logically organized.

I'm very pleased with 9.2 pro. Software, hardware anything! I tried xandros and knoppix after SuSE 9.0 but I don't like 'em.

Talking COMPLETELY HAPPY NOW

Well, to update you all i have tried xandros 3 on my ibm t42 laptop and I have to say, WOW. Everything works outs of the box, wireless, windows networks, novell networks. I am utterly shocked. I have been dissapointed with SUSE and being a recent switch hitter from doze to linux, this is the distro for me. Evolution-----just like Outlook . This is what i was referring to an out of the box solution that can at least from the start give windows users a workable machine. I am very impressed with Xandros, worth the $$$ i tell ya. The only thing that is not working and by no means do I need it, but the fingerprint scanner was not reconized. I really do not care but for all that were in the same boat as me. I am now a happy linux newbie who can go on learning now. Crossover office was a snap, quicken works, man o man.

Cool Suse 9.2

Hi

I started my adoption of linux with Suse 6.4 and have used it ever since. I have been please with every upgrade I have tried with the exception of 9.2. Previously I had 9.0 which used the 2.4 kernel and I thought I would skip 9.1 until the bugs had been soughted out of the 2.6 kernel. There are stiii bugs in it and as with unbunto-adict I aslo in KDE 3.3.

I have not had the problems you have had just little nigglly things that were not there in 9.0. If I could get my scanner to work I would finally ditch Win98 and install Ubunto as I am really interested in trying a debian distro.

I hope you are in no hurry. I just installed 9.2 Pro and I am less than pleased. I'm going to try it out some more but I may
decide to get rid of it and reinstall 9.1 Pro that I was happy with. This is missing some features that I liked with 9.1.
