Can you be more specific on Sun models you find expensive ?
The range od H/W sold by Sun is pretty wide, and there is I think not that much overlap with white box PCs.

If you are talking about SPARC hardware, yes it is expensive. Many people say that.
Perhaps other Sun servers are expensive as well.
On the other hand, Sun hardware is not a mass market product. They are built for reliability
and stability. They are not built for usage as toys or gaming stations. You certainly will be able
to put together your own PC cheaper, even one which is faster, but you still won't have the service and reliability
of a Sun server.
There is something to say for an operating system that is carefully matched to the hardware. So many computer
problems come from incompatibilies with hardware.
