yes, you may be correct, but then give some hint, for my next trial, how do i remove it next time in manner, not destroying needed partitions. i mean-not installation broke things, but improper removing solaris. but result is same, and no known utility from windows or linux, didn.t fix partition table thereafter. because i hadn't anything so valuable on em, i did'nt tried raw recovery methods or "get my data back" lookalike programs.
I can't give some hints having no real description of what you experienced.
Of course, if you asked the Solaris installer to use the whole disk for installing itself, there's almost nothing you can do to recover what was there before ...

only point i can accept here, you must know solaris partition handling very well, before giving "him" a try in mixed environments. and that was my point, i wanted to warn some other "experts like me"
Well, this knowledge need not be too hard:
Solaris is using one and only one primary partition, unlike Windows or Linux that usually want many of them (+ secondary partitions).
It subdivise this single primary partition in slices, just like *BSDs do.
If you are unsure about how to slice your Solaris partition, just create two slices, one for the swap (512Meg or more if your RAM is bigger), all the rest for /.

That's it.

i said that in means of sun JDE or solaris 10. you probably do not use that one for years-or do you?
I've been using Solaris 10 for one year and a half now, and JDS (not JDE) for a bit longer (JDS1 was running on top of Suse Linux).

Question is in comparison between solaris and other Unixes give on same hardware.
nvidia Solaris drivers are quite recent, so they may suffer some issues.

Lets say, java GUI is not as smooth-when rendering graphics. do not ask me why.
And as you are using solaris, you should know, that some configuration applets are written in java on solaris10. and if you open some of them-providing real-time graphs about system functions -those graphs are ugly. I do not know, why they are ugly, but this is, how it draws simple graphic lines.
Never seen such ugliness in GTK applications.
Can you clarify about which "applets" you are talking about ?

i would also like to say, solaris last approach do not feel optimal for me, but remember this is just my opinion.
A couple of your postings weren't reflecting you were expressing an opinion, e.g.:
so do install on separate disk only. unless you wanna loose all you have on your drive. this is not an opinion, just a false statement.
it creats something like shell around your existing partitions, and you will loose normal partition table logic ditto.

By the way, I agree with you concerning some of your complaints about usability (configuration). This is one area where Solaris still has to improve.

Unless I missed it, no one gave an answer for getting the on board ethernet to work? I had this problem too but fortunately I have a coworker who is an experienced Solaris admin. He helped me get my Asus board working. IT seems that the ehci messages are misleading and are not part of the net problem. I found the right driver here
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data...lts.page1.html
IT is item 19 on the above list. There were problems with the install but here is what I did to work through them.
1. pkgrm SK98sol per the instructions
2. look for skge in /etc/driver_alias and make note of the numbers
3. update_drv -d -i '"pciXXXX,YYYY"'
using the numbers from step 2
4. prtconf -pv | grep -i eth
make note of the numbers, especially the pciXXXX,YYYY part
5. pkgadd -d . SKGEsolx
assuming you are in the folder where the downloaded and expanded package is
6. install will almost complete but will give a message about not attaching
The coworker who helped me said that the MB might not map to the standard address
update_drv -a -i '"pciXXXX,YYYY"'
using numbers from step 4

This is from memory (and a few notes) of what I did last night. This worked for me. The only thing I haven't done yet is the default router address. I am told that I need to create a file /etc/defaultrouter with the router address in it

damon_register, thanks for posting!

I got a no-name nic with a realtek chip and got it working, but I shall go back to the yukon marvell after reading your post, (as soon as i have time to play, as i will not have time before next week).

by the way, did you find a way of getting rid of the ehci messages (or even better a fix) at boot, as I hate those error messages!

regards,
tobyl

The SK43G shuttle X has 4 power connectors. One of these does not have a red wire and should not be used for IDE/SATA drives. Make sure your SATA drive is not using the power connector that is missing the red wire... This caused me problems for a short while as they didn't label this clearly as "fan" or something obvious and I wasn't looking very closely when hooking it up.

Is your disk SATA based ?
Solaris supports SATA with several controllers, but VIA based are probably not.
I have a shuttle SK43G (KM400/A) and SATA disks are not seen, I've replaced them with IDE disks, and they are seen with no problem.

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't applies to my configuration.
The SATA disk were properly connected and powered, and worked fine undex Linux, that was really a software (driver) issue.
I'm using the SATA disks in another box now, so I don't know if the problem is corrected in more recent Solaris releases.
