i recently decided to put together a low-end solaris box from parts i saved from my old workplace. just for fun and nostalgia. everything is running decently (even on 64 megs of ram), but i just can't log in remotely from my ubuntu 12.04 laptop.
if i try logging in from an emulated cde login screen (vmware, solaris 9) using the 'choose host' menu item, it works just fine. however, when i try to use xephyr (Xephyr :1 -screen 1024x768 -ac -query 10.10.10.200), the login screen displays fine, i can log in, but then i'm thrown back to the login screen.
i used to have the same issue with a unixware box some time ago, that's when i learned that i have to add the '-ac' switch, but it doesn't help on solaris.
affirmative. all other remote services (rsh, telnet, ssh etc.) are working, even smc (which surprised me, since it's usually a nightmare to get working). what's more, i recently installed owacomp (a backport of openwindows for solaris 9 and 10) and i can log in to openwindows just fine.
just so anyone who stumbles upon this thread knows, the issue was caused most probably by a bug in the version of cde on solaris 9 u8. after patching the system (with the latest patch set, can't remember its date/number off the top of my head) the issue simply vanished.
silly me, after doing years of administration work, forgetting to patch my system.. serves me right. :) anyway, marking the thread as solved.
