I can't help you with this specific problem, but I can say that I'm very disappointed with Sun's patches lately. The last 6 months to 1 year or so, I've had far more problems than ever before! Patches that break more items than they fix. Patches that make systems unbootable. Patches that won't apply for seemingly no reason. Patches that cause unrelated applications to break in mysterious ways. And worse, now I'm dealing with a patch that won't back out (after it broke another application (also Sun software) on my system!).
Unless it's an immediate issue (security or stability), I won't even attempt to patch anymore. The risk is just too high anymore. I've been a huge supporter of Sun (having moved to Solaris to get away from some of the Linux flakiness), but the recent patching issues are making me take a hard look at other platforms again. They make lots of good hardware (although I've had some bad episodes with the entry-level AMD based stuff), Solaris is a wonderfully stable OS, but only if you don't patch it!
