Password Resetting for Username Lockout?

Hi,

How can I reset a user's password if they had locked themselves out for too many login attempts?

Is it??

# passwd USERNAME

or

# passwd -u USERNAME

Im not quite sure on the fist command for resetting as it MAY require the OLD password....Which a user does not remember..

Thx.

What does
Code:
# man passwd
looking for "unlock" tell you what to do?

It tells you to delete the password and basically leave it blank because unlocking an account that has an unknown password is pointless. Not a very good idea unless the other user is sitting right there. And even then, "passwd username" is better as the password is never blank. And if a person doesn't know their password, the

The correct command is:

Code:
passwd username
You need to run it as root or use sudo.

Ok guys...thanks alot.

SO for example, what IF (myusername) cannot remember the password but I know the ROOT password, I can just use SUDO and reset the pass like this? WIll it ask me for my OLD password as well?

# passwd USERNAME

If you are root it won't ask you for the password. If you use sudo, sudo will most likely ask you for your password, but not the password of the user for whom you are trying to change the password.
