Is opensolaris runs perfectly in i386 architecture during installation?

As long as your hardware is supported and you have enough RAM, it should run indeed "perfectly".

Use the Sun Device Detection Tool http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp to check your hardware.

Boot and shutdown time depends on several factors including the number of services enabled.

Yes, you can install opensolaris, I admit using latest build 85:
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thre...threadID=55433

Also for sound you can use great OSS framework/drivers from http://opensound.com

Just for a quick comparo. I just picked up a used Ultra 20 for testing recently.

For startup times, the order is (from fastest to slowest): Vista, OpenSolaris, XP Pro

Shutdown (once again, fastest to slowest): XP Pro, Vista, OpenSolaris

May vary on your hardware of course, but that's what I got with fresh installs and minimal enabled services on that piece of hardware.

hmmm... Sorry, I'm a noob. I don't understand what does "latest build 85" means... I got the "solaris express developer edition" by request on the solaris website. Can I install that DVD for to build a solaris High Availability cluster?

OpenSolaris community create a build (SXCE) every two weaks of a current state of the sources:

Code:
(SXCE) (SXCE) (SXCE) (SXCE) (SXCE) (SXCE) (SXCE)
----build 79----build 80----build 81----build 82----build 83----build 84----build 85--
           \
            \
           SXDE
           1/08
a build is also called a Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE), once per 3 months Sun gets what want out of SXCE and create A Solaris Express Developer Edition (SXDE) that is avialable to download from Sun site and also for free shipment, and one for 6 months Sun create an update for their flagship Solaris 10, last time that happened was 8/07.
