NIS question~

Hi guys,

would like to discuss something on NIS.

was trying to simulate a problem, but cant really get it, so i'm bringin this here to discuss with all the xperts here...

i got a basic NIS setup for testing. just a simple 1 server, 1 slave and 2 clients setup.
say i shut down both the NIS server and the slave server. Thus now, my 2 clients will not be able to bind themselves to anywhere....right ?
So say now...i reboot 1 of my client, and i get such repeated messages like this :

Jul 30 04:18:50 test1 ypbind[592]: NIS server not responding for domain "testdomain"; still trying

seems ok....
now....my question is...does the ypbind process keep itself running in the background even after i boot up into the CDE mode ? if it continues to run, how long does to run ? wat are the effects on this machine if this is continued ? ie : hang ? panick ? hard hang ? slow down ? will the process consume up more memory everytime it retrys ?

just trying to simulate the different errors messages tat could come up in NIS.

if there is no server to (yp)bind to.

yes

until you kill it or until next O/S shutdown AFAIK

hang: no except if a system required resource rely on nis, panic: no, hard-hang: no, slow down:depends on what you are doing and memory leak: not known.
