mysql error

I installed mysql-max-5.0.27-solaris10-i386.pkg on

# showrev
Hostname: xxxx
Hostid: xxxx
Release: 5.10
Kernel architecture: i86pc
Application architecture: i386
Hardware provider:
Domain:
Kernel version: SunOS 5.10 Generic_118844-26

I installed every option available, added mysql as an user and group.

when i try to start mysql, i get the following error

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

all i had to do was

# /etc/init.d/mysql start
