If you are a novice, give up trying to connect to the Internet through a modem. It's overly complicated.

On the other hand, connecting through a router with Ethernet is usually quite easy.

Please explain first what you have set up.

Is your ethernet interface up ?
Can you connect to the LAN ?
Are you using DHCP or fixed IP addresses ?

Take the easy way out and set your modem up with windows then just reboot to linux...
setup lan and your connected..saves you stressing and then if you want to learn the secrets, well your already half way there and can play with linux straight away.,..dont stress toomuch about it as once you set your modem(and i do hope its adsl) it retains the connection when you reboot..i also know that all the dsl modems i've used retain all connection info in there own memory so if that is lost then you have learnt a bit with play ing on linux to have a go...but first just get online so you can get some confidence..ok...
