can't get new console server working

We had several sparc servers using an SCS820 lantronix secure console server. This died unexpectedly several months ago and we replaced it with a Lantronix SecureLinx SLC. But I can't get any of my servers to work with the new console box. I'm using the same RJ45 cables that were used with the SCS820. I've tried using default data settings, tried changing the default data settings, nothing that I've done has helped. I'm trying to connect using command connect direct deviceport #, but when it connects there is nothing there. I know that I could always get to the SC with the old console server, so there must be a configuration parameter that I'm just not getting. Anyone have any thoughts on what I need to change?

What model SLC? I use a bunch of SLC32s.

What connectors on the SPARC server side (DB25, DB9, or RJ45, and mention if you're using any DB9->RJ45 or DB25->RJ45 adapters)?

Did you change console settings in the SPARCs' OBPs from the default (9600/8/n/1 iirc)? If so, did you match them on the SLC side?

Assuming RJ45 connectors on both ends of the cable and no adapters, what's the pinout on both ends?

Do you have the latest SLC firmware (probably won't help, but is useful and nicer)?

SLC8. The servers I'm trying to connect to are V440s and all used RJ45s. I don't know what the console settings were or whether they were changed from default by the previous owner. I'm afraid to unplug the RJ45s because the servers crash when they are unplugged.

On my web display, it is showing that everything that I have plugged into the SLC 8 is idle. Is that normal?

They don't crash, they just break to the OBP . Type "go" at the OK prompt to un-crash. Of course, you can't see the OK prompt, but the fact that they "crash" means some connection is working.

You can do "kbd -a disable" on the OS to prevent this, and edit /etc/default/kbd and set "KEYBOARD_ABORT=disable" to do so every boot. Once you have the Lantronixes set up, though, you may want to re-enable this; breaking to OBP with ESC B (sends a break) is useful.

On the Sun server, what does
Code:
eeprom | egrep "(tty|device)"
say?

On the Lantronix, what does
Code:
show deviceport port X
say, where X is the port number matched to the Sun server? I don't need all of it, just the Data Settings variables.

Also, you need to answer the pinout question since you're RJ-45 to RJ-45. The pins are NOT standard Ethernet and need to look like this: http://www.sunhelp.org/stokely/gifs/RJ-45Mx.gif (reversed on the other end). Finally, is the port on the V440 you're connecting to on a PCI card or on the chassis?

Thanks for your help. I was able to disconnect the cables without crashing

I checked the cable that was already there and it has the same pinouts as the diagram. I also swapped it out with the RJ45 cable that shipped with the SLC8 (which also has the same pinout).

This is the eeprom output -

/ (apollo) # eeprom | egrep "(tty|device)"
ttyb-rts-dtr-off=false
ttyb-ignore-cd=true
ttya-rts-dtr-off=false
ttya-ignore-cd=true
ttyb-mode=9600,8,n,1,-
ttya-mode=9600,8,n,1,-
output-device=screen
input-device=keyboard
diag-device=net
boot-device=bootdisk mirrdisk

and the slc output -

[altair]> show deviceport port 2

I'm connecting to a card on the v440. It has two ports on it - top port is labeled serial management and is the port that was used in the past to connect to the SCS820. There is a link light below that but it is not on. Below that is another port that says network management. None of the cards that are in any of these boxes has a link light on.
