Also, you need to answer the pinout question since you're RJ-45 to RJ-45. The pins are NOT standard Ethernet and need to look like this: http://www.sunhelp.org/stokely/gifs/RJ-45Mx.gif (reversed on the other end). Finally, is the port on the V440 you're connecting to on a PCI card or on the chassis?

Thanks for your help. I was able to disconnect the cables without crashing
I checked the cable that was already there and it has the same pinouts as the diagram. I also swapped it out with the RJ45 cable that shipped with the SLC8 (which also has the same pinout).
This is the eeprom output -
/ (apollo) # eeprom | egrep "(tty|device)"
ttyb-rts-dtr-off=false
ttyb-ignore-cd=true
ttya-rts-dtr-off=false
ttya-ignore-cd=true
ttyb-mode=9600,8,n,1,-
ttya-mode=9600,8,n,1,-
output-device=screen
input-device=keyboard
diag-device=net
boot-device=bootdisk mirrdisk
and the slc output -
[altair]> show deviceport port 2

I'm connecting to a card on the v440. It has two ports on it - top port is labeled serial management and is the port that was used in the past to connect to the SCS820. There is a link light below that but it is not on. Below that is another port that says network management. None of the cards that are in any of these boxes has a link light on.
