XF86Config destroying my life

Slacknewbie/Linuxnewbie attempting to configure XFree86 4.4 to work with:

1)ATi Rage 128 Pro 4XL graphics card
2)Sony XGA LCD with fixed resolution of 1024x768, a vertical sync of 60 HZ and horizontal sync of 48 kHz

I've played around with the XF86Config file every which way I can think to, among other things by: trying each of the r128 and ati drivers; manually entering modelines; attempting a bottom-of-the-barrel VGA style configuration; using both the xfree86setup and xfconfig methods with various arrangements, and so forth and so on and what not ad nauseum.

The common denominators in the log file after every attempt have been an error claiming that my panel dimensions are not specified (though I've tried specifying them under the monitor and screen sections), a line saying something about sending info to an external CRT, and a final reprimand that none of my modes are valid because I'm out of range and I must restrict myself to 0x0-640x480 (though I've tried modes within those parameters, and to no avail). Also, there's a fishy line in there about an APM Bios not showing up. I don't know what that means. Also some trouble with fonts, but I can deal with that later.

Anyway, below is my most recent log. My most desperate hope is that a Slack Xpert will mock me for my newbie ignorance and point me towards a blatantly obvious and simple fix that only a newbie could have missed.

But if you say "RTFM" I don't think I could bear it. No, no, that would simply be too much.

Sincerely,
Yussel the Street Hustler

It looks like you'll need to specify a mode line for your monitors resolutions, as it thinks there all out of sync. Modeline Generator will create a mode line you can copy to your config.

Also could you post your config for the screens.

Thank you for the help Leonscape,

That Modeline Generator is a nifty tool and I used it to create a new modeline which I then inserted into the monitor section of the config file. Alas, no joy. No joy for Yussel. I still got the same old line about all my modes being out of range, my panel dimensions not being specified, etc.

Below I'm posting the screen section of the Config file, but is it possible that my hardware is Linux-proof? It seems unjust that a newbie would get stuck with an intractable, hardware-specific bug, or whatever. Very unjust.

Okay, again thank you for the help.

Couple of things,

change ViewPort too Virtual.

Since you have a fixed range monitor remove the other resolutions.

If you have VertRefresh and HorizSync set to single values, try bounding them with a range instead say: 55-65, 48-53, This sometimes works

A quick-and-dirty cheat is to backup your existing XF86Config, reboot with a Knoppix CD, then copy the Knoppix-generated /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

Okay, again thanks for the suggestions. I've modified my XF86Config in the ways you've suggested but still no progress. Yussel's reality is as cold and as forelorn as ever.

Should you, Leon, or any other kind Slaxperts out there have ideas about what might be done to get XFree86 up and running and thereby salvage my inchoate Linux/Slack campaign, please do let me know. I'll be waiting and watching. For now, good night.

Sincerely,

That is, I tried Leon's tips, but not Specious's suggestion to use a Knoppix CD. I'll look to that as a longer term option: I live in Ireland and we're a Slack Mad country, not a Knoppix CD to be seen among all the alleyways of me Dear Old Dublin. Anyway, I'll keep that one on the longfinger. In the meantime, still searching for a fix!

Sincerely,

Have you seen this:

http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/...?postid=313121

I just installed Slackware on my laptop with a 1400x1050 screen and the above link helped me get X going. I stumbled across your post looking for an answer to a different problem I have with my Slackware installation. Good luck. (By the way, I have used the Knoppix trick many times to fix a screwed up XF86Config file.) If you try that, one thing to remember is Knoppix creates a file named XF86Config-4, while Slackware uses XF86Config. If you happen to have files with both names in the directory /etc/X11, X will always use the one named XF86Config-4 and ignore changes to XF86config.

Goodbye (for now) to Slack

Dear M Yates,

Thanks for the link and the suggestion. Yes, I've several times used xf86config to generate my XF86Config file. I've read the man pages for xf86config as well as several web pages (such as the one you provided) offering guidance in how to use it. I've done the same for XF86Config and XFree86setup, etc.

I am brand new to Linux, and I selected Slackware as my first distro. Since I know Slack has a reputation as a particularly "tough" distro, and because I have no experience in any kind of a command line environment, I decided to use Zipslack to provide more flexibility in the pace of my transition from Windows than a full Slack installation would allow.

When I initially had trouble getting X-windows up and running (after downloading it seperately from the Zipslack package, which doesn't include it), I assumed that this was a Newbie problem and that I would solve it with some intellectual elbow grease--just throw myself into the man pages and other documentation until I learned what was necessary to correct the issue. For a good while I continued to assume that that was the case. After all, what are the odds that a Newbie would immediately encounter an exotic and unsolvable problem?

Alas, I now believe that this may actually be the case. Not only does none of the documentation seem to provide any clues to the origin of the problem, neither does there seem to be any Slack Xpert who knows how to solve it. Either this is a bug specific to Zipslack, or to my somewhat exotic Sony PC and accompanying peripherals. Perhaps I've actually missed an easy fix, but I don't think so. I think this is an indissoluble problem.

So Slackware will have to wait. Down the road I'll try to use the Knoppix CD trick. Or further down the road (years, most likely) when I get a new PC system and not my current Sony LCD setup, I'll try a dual boot with Slack and Windows.

Until then I'll (over time) scan some of the intro to linux literature to build up my knowledge base. I can still mess around in the command line environment in Zipslack, after all.

Other than that, Sayonara to Slack and Linux for now.

Babajobu/Yussel

Don't give up, and stop being so dramatic, man. It's just an operating system
Now onto the meat.

For my LCD to work I had to set up some interesting options in my XF86Config file.
below are the interesting options:

Code:
Section "Monitor"

    Identifier "SVA"

    HorizSync 24.0 - 80.0
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
    Option "dpms"
    Option "MonitorLayout" "TDMS"
    Option "DDCMode" "on"

EndSection
The important/ interesting ones are DDCMode on and MonitorLayout TDMS.
The MonitorLayout tells X you're using a fixed resolution LCD.
DDCMode On tells it to probe for workable modes.

You shouldn't have to fiddle with modelines anymore, man -- it's a thing of the past

add nolisten inet6 and nolisten tcp options to your startx command or create a .xserverrc with xserver options.
It should solve your problem easily

funny xfree destroying your life, why did you upgrade to current :-), if you knew :-)
