USB Memory Stick Remounting problem

Hi,

Am having a problem remounting USB sticks.

Can mount and unmount USB stick just fine...but if I then try to mount it again, it fails, giving a blank screen. So need to reboot to revisit.

Have tried various fstab combinations and links. Currently fstab entry is:

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb vfat auto,user,rw 0 0

using kernel 2.6.18. Everything else seems to work ok.

Suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Further to above

Problem seems to be changes in /dev

on initially mounting the usb stick an entry /sdb1 pops up in /dev.
after unmounting and then remounting. An entry /sdc1(Sdb1 no longer being present) pops up, which explains(I think) why I can no longer access the USB stick.

How can I create a fixed mount point?

Cheers

The "How to write udev rules" HOWTO has the information you need. By creating your own local rule you can request that your device is always assigned the same device name. Not sdb or sdc since these are dynamically generated, but for example /dev/usbstick. I guess if you use the search function here some if not many similar threads will be found where you can get further examples.
The HOWTO: http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html

fyi,

Found a work-around without using udev rules

under: /etc/rc.d/rc.modules-2.6.18 - Just loaded the module for usb-storage

### USB device support:

# USB Mass Storage support:
/sbin/modprobe usb-storage

With the same fstab entry as previous: /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb vfat noauto, user,rw 0 0

I can now mount and then remount my usb key.

The only catch to this is, I have to physically remove the usb key and then plug it back in again to be able to access it a second time. But for my usage this is not a problem.

I guess sometimes trial and error is a substituate for thinking and understanding.
