slackware64-current: NO ROOT PASSWORD DETECTED
install slackware64-current, meet WARNNING: NO ROOT PASSWORD DETECTED.
Press "Yes" to set a root password.
but i got a error:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged.
like attached screen-shot shows.
so I can't set my root password, and when login, it can not login with root.
what can i do now?

The first thing that came to my mind is to boot to the installation media, start the install program, and re-runn Step 5: The Setup Program.
I haven't had to do this for the root password, but I have done to fix other problems in the past. I Don't know for sure that it will work, but it's worth a shot.

All,
I'm experiencing the same issue too, when trying to install a 'minimal' Slackware64 current system.
In my case, that is only installing the packages in the A and L series, and nothing more.
I started of with the A series only, and I'm considering gradually installing the other package sets, in order to find out what is lacking to get to a (minimal) running system.
Some further testing revealed that to get things going as of 12-Sept-2020, you'll also need the following two packages from the n-series:
- krb5-1.18.2-x86_64-1
- pam-krb5-4.9-x86_64-1
I know what to do know for creating my 'minimal' Slackware system.
Maybe a discussion could be started whether or not the a and n package series could be reorganized/merged or whatever, because hey, we are in 2020, and the world is networked anyhow.
Have fun!
Marc

This also happened to me when creating a chroot. The installpkg command would kick out to terminal right after the ncurses install and when it should be moving into neon.
Tadgy in IRC gave me a different installpkg command to use (wrapped in a do loop) which then allowed it to run. Coincidently I was in the L library same as you max242...
Maybe these issues are related?

Ah yes, I understand Patrick's reasoning behind that.
I was not aware that this type of discussion did happen before, but it makes total sense.
Thanks for pointing this out, ponce.
Have fun!

I'm trying to do a minimal install and have tried installing all of the "A" directory, 'perl', 'libunistring', 'krb5', and 'pam-krb5' without success. I get the
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged
messages. This is with slackware64-current as of Oct 9, 2020. Any suggestions for what else I might need to include?
Thanks,
Jim
I included libtirpc-1.2.6-x86_64-1 from the "N" directory and things went as they should.
