slack 7.1 on 4mb laptop via loadlin root login fail

Hi,
I have installed slackware 7.1 on a compaq lte elete 4/40c. I installed it via dos with floppies and ran it with loadlin. I boot to root with no password. Here is the result:

After 2 times i decided to ask rather than dig for answers. Please, any help will be... very... helpful. ^.^

root by default has no password unless you set it up to have one. Did it ask you to create a root password during the installation?

BTW... just to let you know... I don't think Slackware older than the 8.x releases are still officially supported so there may be little documentation left regarding the 7.x releases.
