No video on fresh current after nvidia install + SSD issue
Hello all,
Working on a Dell Precision 7510 with a Quadro M1000M.
Using a SATA3 ssd and a m.2 ssd. 4/30 current iso. MD5 verified.
First issue is that the SATA3 does not show up as a bootable drive after the first reboot. Not just a slackware issue, but also EndeavourOS, Kubuntu, LinuxMint. I updated the BIOS and still got nothing. Thinking this is more the SSD as it was a cheap non-brand name drive. Got a samsung m.2 ssd installed and it works just fine now. SATA drive is still accessible via linux and can be mounted copied to and from. So, not sure what the issue is there.
Second issue, multilib installs, reboots can startx without issue. Go to install the latest stable production branch driver (460.73.01), installs fine after blacklisting xf86-nouveau etc. Reboot, log in, startx, nothing.
It just stalls at the x.org output and then nothing.
I tried the latest feature branch as well. Same result. External monitor, nothing.
I am able to get to a new workspace (ctrl+alt+f2-5) and log in again and try different window managers flux, black etc. All produce the same result except blackbox that actually errors out "connection refused, giving up".

You have not supplied any information for us to go on.
Is this machine's uconde BIOS at you stated of is it UEFI? They are different animals.
If it is UEFI as most systems are in the past few years, post how you are booting. GRUB, ELILO, refind + whatever.
Usually only one drive is "shows up as bootable". You may be able to select another drive with efibootmanager, that all depends on your configuration.

The black hole after installing an Nvidia driver.
What desktop are you booting to? Wayland is less than successful when you have Nvidia cards and their binary. AFAIK, this is an Nvidia problem. Try starting the desktop with the x server. That should work, if your card is supported by the latest driver.
The machine was installed on the SATA3 drive as both UEFI and BIOS(legacy). I tried three differently formatted usb drives. Drive partition table as MBR and GPT after a secure erase. I used refind as default. I did try using ELILO instead of installing refind on a subsequent install. The drive issue is fine now as the m.2 drive works perfect using ELILO and UEFI disabling legacy roms, have not tried to install refind as the second issue is my main concern.
I am booting to plasma. I skipped xfce. I’ll try booting with x server when I have another moment. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK, so the m.2 dirve boots. That is a step forward. Could you post what you would like to accomplish with the ssd drive.
I would suggest if you want to boot from the SDD, tell us what system you want to boot from it.
Since you installed from a live .iso, you are set in run level 4. To make trouble shooting a little easier, change /etc/inittab to start in level 3. You will see this line:
Quote:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
in the inittab. Change the 4 to a 3. This is the way Slackware comes except on a live .iso. That will boot to a command prompt, and you can log in as root or a user. A startx command from there as a regular user should start the desktop. When it fails, there is a log file called "Xorg.0.log". Post the results, and we can go from there.
The drive issue was more for my own benefit, why did it not boot after the first reboot was my main question about it. Not a big deal, just personal information. I have the SATA drive set as a /data mnt. The m.2 came as a test to see if it would do the same thing. When it works consistently I decided to use the m.2 over the SATA as the primary boot drive. That’s all working great.
The installer wasn’t a live iso. I am dropped to a terminal to log in every time I boot. That’s how I prefer to go as opposed to starting in a window manager.
Inittab should still be the default 3 assignment already, I have not changed that file yet. I log in with my user or root account, doesn’t matter #startx going to plasma and that’s where it stalls at the “black hole” x.org output.
Just a thought, you can change which desktop will start with startx command by running the command 'xwmconfig' as a regular user. Try another desktop, just to confirm is is not KDE causing the problem.
Thank-you for the information. I just wanted to make sure that driver supports your card, it does.
Another thought, some laptops have two video cards. Does yours have two, or just the one? As root, run the command 'lspci | grep VGA' and see what shows up. Let us know.
