Newbie Help!

First of all I want to make sure that it is appropriate for me to be posting my newbie questions here. I am a newbie installing Slackware but if I should be posting this elsewhere PLEASE tell me.

So I have installed Slackware 10.1 from CD following the instructions from the Slackbook v2 and from threads on this site. After going through all the Slackware setup and configuration menus and having set lilo up to dual boot with Windows I restarted my system. Lilo works great and I get to my first question:

Why does it say "darkstar" where it is prompting for my login? Can this be changed?

So I typed in "root" and entered a password which it accepted. Now I am at a prompt that looks like this:

root@darkstar:~#

I am unclear of where I am in my file system. When I type "ls" I get this:

loadlin16c.txt loadlin16c.zip

Most commands that I enter are not accepted. I have been following along in the Slackbook and at this point it wanted me to start configuring things like "netconfig" and "xorgconfig" but nothing is working.

I am sure that I am totally missing something. Could someone point me on my way?

Thanks so much. And please let me know if this would be better posted in the newbie section.

the "~" (tilde) sign just indicates you are in 'roots' home directory.......type in
Code:
xorgconf

Hello,

Welcome to slack!
darkstar is the default hostname for slackware, you can change it to whatever you want. The hostname is (should be) a unique name to indetify the PC on a network.

If you ever get 'lost' in the file tree, type 'pwd'. It stands for print working directory, it will tell you where you are and you can go from there.
As the previous poster said, ~ stands for the persons home dir, so say my username was jason, ~/ is the same as /home/jason =)

netconfig allows you to setup your network card, hostname, gateway, etc.
xorgconfig is correct, sounds like you tried it as root, so it should work fine.

let us know if you have any problems,
-Jason

P.S. I just saw your other post about the fatal error, that may be related to why xorgconf didn't work.
I'll respond to that post, just wanted to mention it here.
