manual LILO installation

Hello all. During my installation of slackware 10.0, Lilo didn't install to the MBR, so I have to install it manually. This is the same problem faced by other people. One person said that he inserted Installation CD1 and mounted /mnt/ and then exec sbin/lilo. The problem with me is that I'm such a newbie that the only thing I can do is stick in the CD and get to the root prompt. Could someone please show me step by step (i.e., specifically what I'm supposed to type at the root prompt) how to manually install Lilo? I've read the Book at the slackware website, but that only covers a very general idea of what I'm supposed to do. The Book doesn't go into specifics.

Thanks in advance,

You've got the answer right there. Boot the CD and follow the instructions to mount your HD as /.

I ran pkgtool and installed the lilo package then /sbin/lilo after mounting my HD as root I think. I gotta start writing stuff like this down. :roll:

These instructions are for those that have a separate boot partition and want to install Lilo into the MBR. I'm also dual booting into Windows.

Once you get to the root prompt, you have to make directory:

#mkdir test

I'm using "test" as a directory name, but you may use any name you wish.

Next, you have to mount the root partition into the directory called "test":

#mount /dev/hdc6 /test

hdc6 is the name of my root partition. You have to know where root partition is and what it is called.

Then

#cd /sbin
#liloconfig

At this stage, slackware makes a template of the lilo.config file in /etc.

You now have to edit lilo.config:

#cd /test/etc
#emacs lilo.config

Find the lines:

root =
other =

Type

root = /dev/hdc6
other = /dev/hdc1

Phew! I hope this gets some people started.
