Cannot use fdisk to write partition data

OK. My Problem: I had Windows XP Pro SP2 on brothers computer. Gave disk back to a friend. Some strange error came up after 5 days of using it, so i decided to just install 2000 as I had it on me

So I put it in, but according to it I have no HDD. The bios tells me I have one (Western Digital Caviar 120GB.

So I thought, why not install Linux? I had been wanting to for a while, and this gave me the opportunity. Downloaded the first disc, put it in, logged in as root with all default options, and it told me that it could not write to the partition table, and that the disc label was gone or wrong. It then said about some random error in partition 4 (i never made one)

Slax (live CD version) works fine

I am prepared to do any total reformatting stuff that I need to, it broke 5 days after a complete reformat anyway

Any help here?

Just to rule out faulty hardware, try downloading this tool to see what it says.
