Raspberry Pi 4 - kernel 5.15.x available for testing on Slackware ARM

I built and tested this kernel 5.15.1 when I had some free time. It's working in all the ways I'd expect and require.

If any of you ARMed Slackers with Raspberry Pi 4s would like to try it out, it's available from the Slackware UK mirror repo - https://slackware.uk/sarpi/sarpi4_kernel_5.15.1/

Have fun. Please let me know if you find any issue(s) with it.

Thought I'd let you know that I'm _not_ having any issues with 5.15.1, I'm posting this from my Pi4, with HDMI audio streaming in the background, all good so far. Thanks once again, cheers.

WOW! That is a pleasant surprise. Thanks for letting me know, and you're very welcome. Cheers!

[Exaga] same everything as netcrawl, now if we could just get that moZes guy to get moving with the 1000's of updates applied to slackware64 current to arm side, we'd really be jamming.

As always, thank you, CHEERS!

HAHA! Are you cracking due to the excitement and anticipation of Slackware AArch64 being completed and released? If so, I'm right behind you - being massively excited myself. Whoohoo! LOL!

As far as the SARPi shizzle goes, glad it's working for you and thanks for the thanks. I feel guilty because all I do is mash together the hard work of the Slackware Team and the Raspberry Pi kernel/firmware. So, all the thanks belongs to them really. Especially Stuart.

Reading between arm.slackware.com, the ChangeLogs, and the Slackware ARM YouTube Channel, I think Stuart's done/doing a truly amazing job and will continue to do so. I am somewhat surprised that none of the recent/latest news he's published has been mentioned here on LQ, or elsewhere. I've been keeping a close eye on it for sure.

Whether Slackware ARM 15.0 and/or AArch64 is released this year or next is not important. There's quite a few users voicing their frustration and impatience on the Slackware LQ forum, and has been for some time. Timing for the release of Slackware ARM 15.0 will, of course, be concurrent with Slackware x86-64, or at least that's what I would expect judging by previous Slackware stable releases. Perhaps MoZes will choose to release both Slackware 15.0 and AArch64 simultaneously. These are very exciting times indeed. Although I'm not too hung up on version numbers, and have been running Slackware ARM -current exclusively for goodness knows how many years anyway, it's extremely exciting for me to contemplate running Slackware AArch64 on hardware that can support it and a veritable long-awaited dream come true it shall be when it happens.

Yes, to everything, this arm.slackware.com comment is cool!

I'll have a look at the Raspberry Pi4 support in the coming months. Basic support is mostly complete, but needs tweaks before it can be Directly Integrated into Slackware.

It sure is. It'll be interesting to see how MoZes implements support for the RPis. As far as I'm aware, the Raspberry Pi kernel source is extensively patched for the devices, especially for building the DTBs - which seem to be different from the mainline kernel once they've been compiled. The last time I built the mainline kernel, and tried booting it on a Raspberry Pi, it resulted in an epic kernel panic. I wasn't motivated enough to investigate.

kernel 5.15.1 working here, too.

I'm excited for the upcoming AArch64 and 15.0, but -current is working well for me, so waiting with excitement, not impatience.

Yeah, Slackware ARM 15.0 release candidate 1 is solid as a rock for me. I've been really hammering it for the past few weeks on the Raspberry Pi 4 test machine and the OS never falters, not even a hiccup. It just keeps on performing perfectly. I'm seriously impressed with it TBH.

Raspberry Pi 4 - kernel 5.15.x available for testing on Slackware ARM

Will 5.15.x compile for the Pi3?

No reason why it shouldn't. I haven't built it and tested on the RPi3 but I'm guessing it'll work just as well.

Code:
root@slackware:~# git clone --depth=1 --branch rpi-5.15.y git://github.com/raspberrypi/linux
root@slackware:~# cd linux
root@slackware:~/linux# make bcm2709_defconfig
root@slackware:~/linux# make -j$(nproc) Image
root@slackware:~/linux# make -j$(nproc) dtbs
root@slackware:~/linux# make -j$(nproc) modules && make modules_install
root@slackware:~/linux# cp arch/arm/boot/Image /boot/kernel7.img
root@slackware:~/linux# cp System.map /boot/System.map
root@slackware:~/linux# cp arch/arm/boot/dts/*.dtb /boot/
root@slackware:~/linux# reboot
That's about all there is to it.

It's not you that's stupid, it's me. I created those pages and links months ago in preparation and anticipation of Slackware AArch64 being released. In hindsight, I did it far too early.

I've put notices in bold text on the home page and on each affected SARPi downloads page, but it still seems that they're overlooked. Other than do a lot of editing (which would need undoing/redoing when the time comes) I prefer to leave it "as is" in the hope that end-users are a little more proficient at RTFM.

And when you do, make sure you let us know how long it all took, I'm curious.

At that point there should be config for the source just cloned? If needing to change something before continuing?
