I am Slackware newbie. Last week, I installed 15.0 from USB thumb drive, into my Thinkpad T440P (Intel Graphics). I have only been using it for Firefox and Mplayer. I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with X.
The problem happened about 10 times this week. I don't know what exactly triggers it. When I try to open a new window, I get an error message like this...
Code:
$ xev
No protocol specified
xev: unable to open display ':0'
$ xterm
No protocol specified
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display: :0
I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to exit FVWM2. Then, I type startx again, and everything is back to normal.
By the way, I get the same intermittent error with all the window managers that I tried (FVWM2, KDE, and Fluxbox).
The X log show nothing unusual.

By the way, here's the X log file after I exited FVWM2...

Ok. And you're not trying to open those things as root in a terminal?
Example. You opened a terminal and used su - to become root, then try to do those things..
Just to make sure.
And how exactly do you open them? It's not super clear from the information you included. It could perhaps be useful if you include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log information here.
If you get the message again, please immediately snip the last part of /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure (you can anonymize the secure log if you don't want "private" information here) in the following way:
In the "Select Prompting Mode", I selected "terse."
This has an effect only on the installer logic and how it interacts with the user - no effects on (to be) installed package sets.
I recommend you to create a new user with "adduser" and to set the default groups for it, then to see if you can reproduce the issue while using this new user account.
no. All the menu buttons were dead. Cannot create any new windows.
Well, the error message is typically a message that you get when you have no authority to open an xorg window or use xorg. This typically happens if you try to open something as another user.
Something could have triggered you the owner an xorg authority in the running instance to drop/lose the authority, which would lead to a scenario like the one you describe.
What puzzles me though is your prompt
Code:
tpbox>
What kind of prompt is that? Is that a custom bash prompt you made in .bash_profile/bashrc?
Ok. And you're not trying to open those things as root in a terminal?

No, I was not doing those things as root.
I am using FVWM2. I usually have only xterm and firefox opened.
For example, I was using xterm to edit /etc/acpid/acpi_handler.sh. I run the xev command, because I wanted to get the keycode for some multimedia keys. When xev didn't work, I tried xterm. I tried xclock. Nothing like that worked. Essentially, anything that require a new window to be created...didn't work.
Like I said early this is all intermittent. 99% of the time, everything works fine.
Just 5 minutes ago, I got the errors again. So I had to Cntl-Alt-Backspace to kill X and get back to console. Once in console, I did startx. Now X is working perfectly.
Here is the files you asked for immediately after it stopped working--5 minutes ago.
