wmsystemtray dockapp now giving me grief some strange error,it's no longer working.

It's never done this before, no not in Slack. I've never had an issue with this dockapp in Slack before. wmsystemtray is now giving me this, installed off a slackbuild from slackbuilds.org. I have yet to find a fix for it, in all of the other Distros that I see this in.

Code:
$ wmsystemtray
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
  Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
  Serial number of failed request: 36
  Current serial number in output stream: 65
that didn't work
Code:
userx@slacker101:~
$ sudo  fc-cache -v -f
/usr/share/fonts/OTF: caching, new cache contents: 23 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/TTF: caching, new cache contents: 114 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/Type1: caching, new cache contents: 64 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/Speedo: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/misc: caching, new cache contents: 95 fonts, 0 dirs
/root/.local/share/fonts: skipping, no such directory
/root/.fonts: skipping, no such directory
/var/cache/fontconfig: cleaning cache directory
/root/.cache/fontconfig: not cleaning non-existent cache directory
/root/.fontconfig: not cleaning non-existent cache directory
fc-cache: succeeded
userx@slacker101:~
$ wmsystemtray
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
  Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
  Serial number of failed request: 36
  Current serial number in output stream: 65

I use wmsystemtray and I do not see your problem. Googling the error showed this amongst others. The trend seems to be either missing font files or unrecognised font files.

yeah, that's the bugger, slack has what it needs, I've uninstalled it, slackbuild it again, and still getting that error. Is there a way to see if all of the default fonts from a full install are installed, and install what maybe missing?

Looking at code in your previous thread:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ly-4175621355/

... do you have font-misc-misc package installed? (ls /var/log/packages/font-misc-misc*)

I just went into current to see what its doing with wmsysemtray, it should be, I did a full install as always, I'll check it after I get out of here. thanks for the lead. this is current's
Code:
root@slack64.current.org:~
# ls /var/log/packages/font-misc-misc*
/var/log/packages/font-misc-misc-1.1.2-noarch-1
when it gets done updating, I'll install wmsystemtray, change to wmaker and see whats up in here, .. then standard next.

/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.dir

in standard Slack now;

Code:
userx@slacker101:~
$  ls /var/log/packages/font-misc-misc*
/var/log/packages/font-misc-misc-1.1.2-noarch-1
Code:
userx@slacker101:~
$ find /usr/share/fonts -name "fonts.dir"
/usr/share/fonts/Type1/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/OTF/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/fonts.dir
Looks all the same to me. hum... maybe uninstall WMaker then reinstall it and see what that does.

remove wmaker installed it again using the slackbuild off the sight, nope, downloaded the files for slackbuild 14.2 for WMaker

Code:
userx@slacker101:~
$ wmsystemtray
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
  Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
  Serial number of failed request: 36
  Current serial number in output stream: 65
userx@slacker101:~
$
userx@slacker101:~
$ wmaker --version
Window Maker 0.95.8
still not working. It's always worked on here. same laptop, same distro... both versions.

What 'apps' are you using wmsystemtray for ?

I have seen odd things happen when loading kmix or rarely nm-applet. I think it one of those objects lost it's connection to dbus(?) and crashes wmsystemtray. FWIW I use argument '-s'.

As an experiment, when starting wmsystemtray try loading the 'tray apps' manually.

standard, nm-apple, bluetooth, deluge when its running, dropbox are my main ones. network ~ nm-appet is a must to see, else I cannot get out.

I am in current as wmsystemtray is working in this one, so I came back in here to see what difference the fonts maybe, only having root I thought it was root issue so I created a user and still the same as far as WMaker is not getting the address to WPrefs.app at all, its screwed up. so Now I am wondering if I should notify someone on that matter. I got the big message saved off the login terminal, run lv 3. anyways, that's a side track thought.

My fonts are the same.
Code:
bash-4.4$ find /usr/share/fonts -name "fonts.dir"
/usr/share/fonts/Type1/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/OTF/fonts.dir

It is very odd, when I load 'tray apps' I usually have a script that starts the 'apps' from ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart

These commands are all in 1 script submitted to background by the autostart file:

Code:
sleep 3
nm-applet &
sleep 1
kmix &
sleep 1
blueman-applet &
sleep 1
parcellite &
maybe give that a shot ? nm-applet is always first

I keep mine IN the autostart, just when I do not see them working is when one should use the terminal to see any feed back their maybe to see why its not working. and well you see the results in here, this post.

I use fbautostart that takes care of everything in autostart nm-applet, blueman-applet, and alike that goes in the system tray.

I have wmsystemtray in the dock. I start nm-applet and orage from ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart with
Code:
#Start nm-applet
( pgrep NetworkManager && ! pgrep nm-applet ) && nm-applet &
#Start orage calendar application
orage &
Another thought is that perhaps you have some entry in ~/.Xresources requesting a font that is failing.
