Might I inquire why not setup a network printer directly?
I actually had to do exactly vice-versa once. I had a custom Suse install that had a tiny bug in the system-config-printer, every time you tried to add a printer it would go into an endless loop searching for drivers. I finally figured out if I added the printer as a network printer(any phoney ip works) then edit it later to add the driver and usb connection.
