Wireless and X drivers

I have two questions. First of all, are graphics drivers compiled into the kernel or are they completly seprate.

Second, this is the problem that is stumping me, when i install slackware 9 from the iso cd, i choose to use the default kernel that slack loaded by default. When the install is done, it boots up and everything is great. When i put my pcmcia wireless orinoco card in it goes *beep**beep* like it should and the card works great. When i recompile the kernel it doesnt work. I've tried using the config-ide-2.4.20 out of the /boot diretory, ive tried using oldonfig (Which wont even boot) but nothing works. When i pop the card in, it just goes beep boop. (not recognized) Does anyone have any idea what i can do? Thanks for your help!!
