Well I know it's optomized for slackware but are there other setups adjusted to run smoothly w/ slack? Or is dropline the only one optomized for slack performance?

Just curious before I go along with shilo's thing, which by the way has helped me a whole lot so kudos and thanks to you shilo. Main reason I ask is I like to have a choice because I tend to change desktop styles at a whim (did it a lot on windows).

I can't tell you why to move to Dropline Gnome, but I can give you a potential reason for NOT moving to their package: Dropline Gnome is compiled for 686 processors and doesn't support the 586.

There are still a lot of 586 processors out there, and if you happen to be using something like an AMD-K6, the version of Gnome provided by Slackware will work for you and Dropline Gnome won't.

Dropline is a smooth interface... it installs only specific apps rather than a ton of apps for one function. Great support site. It looks and performs better than the default gnome that ships with slackware. I don't think there is any particular reason, ultimately it's up to you to decide, but if you like gnome I'm pretty sure you'll like dropline.

I'm a big fan of Dropline, mainly because it includes Ximian Evolution, which is the Email program I prefer. -- J.W.

Pros: Better performance on i686 machines. Carefully streamlined package set. Some extra features, which are quite nice. Good default theme.

Cons: Doesn't work on i586 or lower machines. Very difficult to uninstall. Goes against some of the things that are so good about Slack in the first place: takes away from the user control of what's installed, some loss of modularity, not stock version as provided by maintainer.

It's all a matter of preference, but I prefer the stock GNOME that comes with Slackware. If you like to have all your updates taken care of and such, you might prefer Dropline GNOME.

Ximian Evolution is a pro along with Exchange connector now offered for free....

I think it makes and excellent workplace desktop.....

I didn't like the way it changed the location of certain files....

If you install it be sure to do a backup first (that should be a WARNING during install)...

If you want it just for GNOME you are better off to install GNOME not DROPLINE

All in all it is great if you just want to get up and running quickly (on a fast machine that is supported by the install)
