I've had the same problem. There's a memory-leak somewhere. It's probably either the kernel (2.6), gnome (2.6), or the Beep mediaplayer, that's all I could gather before my system crashed. I really suspect is to be bmp, but I can't be sure (my system seems to do fine without it).

dmesg only gives the kernel messages (down to the point where / is mounted). the other messages that follow can be seen before logging in (or just after) by using SHIFT+PGUP (or PGDN) to scroll back through the messages.

Cool! Oh yeah in answer to that question - I'm using the bare.i kernel on me slackware CD because I screwed over my MBR (feel free to look at my other post :P)

I had the same problem, it was because DMA wasn't turned on.
