Which one do you like best? CL or X

I don't know about you, but i feel a bit more comfortable near the command line interface, even though sometimes I don't know what i'm doing. X seems to show everything, which i don't like. I don't know why....

X with 18 billion xterms open. Root X on tty8 (CTRL ALT F8) with, again, 18.5 billion xterms open.

So a combo of both is pretty comfy with me.

Cool

Yea, I like X as well. I can have virtually unlimited consoles screens open and it is easier to scroll them back up to see the result of an earlier command. I can also resize the console screen and the font size so I can view really long text output.

So you need to add a third choice to the poll, "CLI in X".

I like X also. Although I still boot to run level 3, I usually end up starting x anyway, and just opening console screens...not quite 18 billion, but close

I have to add though, that I prefer to work from a console screen rather than "mousing around".

I do almost everything from the command line, usually from a terminal emulator in X.

Ok ok, so you caught me. Yes, I was exaggerating, I rarely have more than a mere 1.5 million open

No honestly, at least 10 though... I like to multi-task myself, AND my OS; one of the major reasons I preferred linux a long time ago over the "alternatives".

Cool

Hmm, a screen with 1024 by 768 pixels only has 786432 pixels, so unless you have a high res, you cant even see 1.5million difference pixels...

One of the absolutely coolest things about Linux to me is half a dozen tty's. And screen - screen is cool, too. DOS's single console - ugh.

There's something about not having to screw with graphics and video crap and meeses and windows (which you sorta do with screen) that I love. Just fingers on a keyboard and eyes on a screen.

That being said, I find a lot of command line work to be tedious when simple, so love mc from console. (Actually, mc is kinda weak, though - DOS Navigator is a much better program but... *shrug*... DOS.) So that moves more to a graphical angle, even if it's still 'character mode'.

And then X has its nice aspects to go with its inconveniences and limitations. And as others have said, in X, you've got lots of terminal windows open to get around the limitations. But that puts it back to console.

So let's say I find GUIs to be bad for computing but just because they *are*, not because they *have* to be. And what I like is a CLI orientation with a GUI that is kept in its place - as a graphical add-on slapped over a real command line for eye candy and certain conveniences, but not as a way of life. The OS and the user need to be able to do without them.

That being said, there's no way in hell I'm ever figuring out what scripts and other files are needed for pppd and how to write them even if I knew that. So it's all ideal - I need a bailout like BasicLinux's eznet stuff - even if that is done from console, it's essentially a 'wizard'.

So, yeah, what killi said... only longer.

I am extremely comfortable using the CL but I have gotten past the point of using it for everything. I like the pretty graphics involved in X.

However, at the end of the day I still program only in vi, so to an extent I am still a CL guy. These days it is usually a command line open in an xterm. Afterall, the console command line just doesn't look as pretty on my 18" LCD as X does.

I like using the command line for most things, but KDE 3.1 is really nice. I only just started using KDE (I used to used Ice and then FVWM2 )a little while ago and I am hooked! Slackware's version of K is simply the best
