What kernel related files do I need to download?

I was reading the Slackware security advisory for June 15.

I am running Slackware -current with kernel 2.6.6, and I will probably upgrade to kernel 2.6.7 later today (which was just released earlier today).

Do I need to download any of the files listed in the above security advisory? Namely the kernel-headers-2.6.6-i386-3.tgz package, or the kernel-generic-2.6.6-i486-5.tgz package? I take it that I don't need the kernel-source-2.6.6-noarch-3.tgz package since I am upgrading to 2.6.7.

I haven't seen a slackware 2.6.7 package so I assume you're compiling from source, therefore you just need to go grab the full source from kernel.org and compile it, no need to get the packages since I assume 2.6.7 has fixed this bug :)

Cheers for the heads up, I knew it was comming soon but I haven't bothered checking for the last few days ;)

Steve

Edit: UNLESS -

You want to get those packages so you have a good kernel to fall back on if your compile doesn't go the way you plan...then it might be a good idea to get the kernel headers and generic :)

I will be downloading and compiling the 2.6.7 kernel from kernel.org.

I guess what I'm confused about is do I need the files listed in the June 15 Security advisory, like kernel-headers-2.6.6-i386-3.tgz and kernel-modules-2.6.6-i486-3.tgz? Or do the headers and modules come with the full 2.6.7 tarball downloaded from kernel.org? Or do they have nothing at all to do with kernel 2.6.7 so I don't need to worry about them?

For my part, I run 2.6.6 with header files of 4.22
( grep UTS_RELEASE /usr/include/linux/version.h )

I compile programs every days and they run fine, I compile kernel too without a problem, if I want the program look in 2.6.6 header files, I would include them (/usr/src/linux/include) but I never did that as the program compile never requested it.

Right, I advise you get these packages as per the security advisory:

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/testing/packages/linux-2.6.6/kernel-generic-2.6.6-i486-5.tgz
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/testing/packages/linux-2.6.6/kernel-headers-2.6.6-i386-3.tgz

This will give you a slackware kernel to fall back on. (There is no modules is there?)

BUT you do NOT need them if you are COMPILING 2.6.7

The compiled kernel will have everything you need.

If I'm not clear (or plain wrong) please ask / correct! :)

Other wise good luck!

Steve
