What are those * files?

When I do a ls in some dir, I see some files with a * on the end. Why do they have this?

Bash's friendly way of telling you they
have the executable bit set :)

Great, thanks Tink. But a couple more questions. The * is not officially part of the file name, correct? WHat is the coloring scheme, some files are green others red, what are all the color and what do they represent?

No, it's NOT part of the filename, actually
there might be files named * around :)

The colours:
do a less /etc/DIR_COLORS
;)

If you did a
man -k color | grep 1
you'd find some info on that... :)
