I imagine, being an old hand with Slackware, you've got your Kernel Upgrade Procedures down "pat" ( pun intended )
If not, holler here on LQ before you install -and-or- upgrade.
Yes, I upgrade the headers and use their appearance in the slackpkg list as a heads-up that there is a new kernel coming down the line. They don't appear on the list because I've blacklisted them. So after I've finished the main update, I download those two packages via FF and install them using installpkg. That way, I always have the old ones available in case the new ones don't work. I run removepkg on them only when I've booted the new kernel successfully.

Hi Hazel! I didn't have a problem, and I updated yesterday. I'm also using slackpkg and slackpkg+, which does AAA libraries before all else. If you're really worried, you could update the aaa_library file first.
No problem updating this morning. The new kernel boots just fine and libreoffice and java are finally talking to each other. Thank you Eric! It took time but you always come up with the goods.
@garpu: aaa_libraries always updates first anyway because nothing comes alphabetically before it.
