volume applet and mute

Hi all

I have two minor but annoying problems and I havn't found a solution yet, so I'm posting in hope that someone points me to right direction because I'm tired of googling

first thing that annoys me is that (after I finally managed to set my multi-keyboard keys via xmodmap) when I increase volume, this "volume applet" (?) shows up:
http://shrani.si/f/h/wa/3ueod6sj/volapp.png
and it increases volume by 10% per key-press. How can I set it to de/increase volume by only 5% or so??

the next thing is that mute doesn't work (for example if I right click on KMixer's icon and select mute the music still plays)

I would really appreciate any help or links to similar problems

p.s. I use slackware 12

Bring up alsamix in an xterm and watch what it does when you mute. Chances are you need to change Kmixer's config a bit.

I mostly use external speakers plugged into my laptop so even with mute on only the internal speakers get muted. I could, of course, reconfigure Kmixer so the headphone output gets muted by default.
