Using chroot to update system and install new packages in another partition.

I am running 14.2 and have installed 15.0 in another partition.

I must now update 15.0 with all the patches that have been issued using slackpkg and then install new packages using slackbuilds or sbopkg.

I want to do this by chrooting into 15.0, because then I can carry on working as normal in 14,2 while the installs.compiles are running on the 15.0 partition.

Is this is safe or there will be problems?

Yes, it's safe. You mount the 15.0 root fs somewhere, say /slack15. Then you will also need in 14.2:

Code:
mount -o bind /proc /slack15/proc
mount -o bind /dev /slack15/dev
mount -o bind /dev/pts /slack15/dev/pts
before chrooting.

Code:
Temporary failure in name resolution. wget: unable to resolve host address
I can't connect to the ftp mirrors as chroot.

So I'm downloading to harddisk from the ftp mirror and will do the update from there.

This means that I can't use sbopkg either.

Interesting. Check /etc/resolv.conf in 15.0 fs. If there is nothing, copy the file from 14.2.

Yes. That was what was needed.
I'm upgrading now.
Once again, thanks Petri.
