User No Sound - Browser Plugin problem?

I have netscape 7.1 and shockwave 6.0 plugin. As root the sound and performance on flash sites are good. As a user, the sound is gone, and the performance seems choppy. All other sound using programs work fine as user except flash sites on netscape. Why would sound work with a flash site as root and not user; when as user all other sound works correctly? Netscape folder has full permissions granted to user/user group.

Using slack9,
device is SBLive! on emu10k1 mod
netscape 7.1 shockwave/flash 6.0 user sound borked
KDE desktop

Do you have arts running as a user? controlpanel-->sound-->sound server configuration is where you can find it I believe.

Check the permissions on the /dev/sound and /dev/mixer devices. It's highly possible your user is not in the "wheel" group and therefore cannot access these devices.

BTW, this has been covered again and again and again on this forum: make sure you do a search before asking questions like that...

Thanks for your replies. aRts is running, tests fine, and user access to default sound device is adequate because all user sound but the specific problem with browser/flash is working perfectly. I.e. I can play mp3's, run realplayer stuff, etc. The only problem is with the flash sound - which works as root, but not as user. I haven't seen any search results regarding this specific problem: it's some kind of netscape/flash/emu10k1 permission or config quirk somewhere in my setup that effects user but not root and only knocks the sound out of flash.
